Even new homes get termites

Termites eat just about anything made of wood: framing, baseboards, flooring, doors, staircases, fence posts and old stumps, plus paper and sheetrock. And a brand-new house isn’t safe just because it’s new. Before that neighborhood was built, it was open land where termites lived and ate freely. Your new home just became their next meal.

They usually get in through cracks in the foundation, or where the concrete pulls away from plumbing. They build mud tubes as they go, to keep themselves moist and protected.

One easy thing you can do: keep shrubs and tree limbs trimmed back from the house. Better air flow dries out damp spots faster, which helps with termites and carpenter ants.
